Sahih al-Bukhari
Imam al-Bukhari (810–870 CE)
The most authentic book after the Quran. Imam Bukhari spent 16 years compiling it from 600,000 narrations.
Sahih Muslim
Imam Muslim (815–875 CE)
The second most authentic collection. Imam Muslim selected 12,000 hadiths from 300,000 narrations.
Sunan Abu Dawud
Abu Dawud al-Sijistani (817–889 CE)
Focuses on legal hadiths. Selected 4,800 from 500,000 narrations, with emphasis on fiqh rulings.
Jami at-Tirmidhi
Imam al-Tirmidhi (824–892 CE)
Notable for its grading commentary. Includes notes on whether scholars agreed or differed on each narration.
Sunan an-Nasa'i
Imam an-Nasa'i (829–915 CE)
Known for its rigorous chain criticism. Has a strong focus on prayer (salah) narrations.
Sunan Ibn Majah
Ibn Majah (824–887 CE)
The sixth of the six major collections. Contains narrations not found in the other five books.
