Common Misconception

"Islam is an Arab religion — only for Arabs"

The Truth

The Quran explicitly declares diversity of race and language as a sign of Allah. The majority of the world's 1.8 billion Muslims are non-Arab — Indonesia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh together have more Muslims than all Arab countries combined.

Al-Hujurat 49:13

"O mankind, We created you from one male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous."

Farewell Sermon — Sahih Muslim 1218

"There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, or of a non-Arab over an Arab, or of a white person over a black person — except in terms of righteousness."

Detailed Explanation

Bilal ibn Rabah (Ethiopian), Salman al-Farisi (Persian), and Suhayb ar-Rumi (Byzantine) were among the closest companions of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet's farewell sermon abolished racial hierarchy over 1,400 years before modern civil rights movements. Of the world's 1.8 billion Muslims, roughly 300 million are Arabs — about 17%.

Where This Misconception Came From

The Arabic language of the Quran and the geographic origin of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula lead some to assume it is ethnically Arab. The Prophet ﷺ himself repeatedly condemned racial superiority.
