Common Misconception

"Muslims worship Muhammad ﷺ"

The Truth

Muslims do not worship Muhammad ﷺ. Islam is strictly monotheistic — only Allah is worshipped. Muhammad ﷺ is the final prophet, a human being, and a servant of Allah.

Quran References

Āl 'Imrān 3:144

وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلَّا رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِ ٱلرُّسُلُ

"Muhammad is not but a messenger. Other messengers have passed on before him."

Al-Kahf 18:110

قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ

"Say: I am only a man like you, to whom it has been revealed that your God is but one God."

Hadith References

Sahih Bukhari 3445

"Do not excessively praise me as the Christians praised Jesus. I am only a servant of Allah. Say: the servant of Allah and His messenger."

Detailed Explanation

When the Prophet ﷺ died, Abu Bakr (RA) said: 'Whoever worshipped Muhammad — Muhammad is dead. But whoever worships Allah — Allah is the Ever-Living who never dies.' The Shahadah clearly separates Allah from Muhammad: 'There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger.' Muslims send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ but all worship is directed exclusively to Allah.

Where This Misconception Came From

A common misunderstanding among non-Muslims who observe the deep love Muslims have for the Prophet ﷺ and assume it constitutes worship. The distinction between love, reverence, and worship is central to Islamic theology.
