Common Misconception
"Islam oppresses women and treats them as inferior to men"
The Truth
Islam granted women rights to own property, inherit, initiate divorce, and conduct business — 1,400 years before most Western nations did. The Quran explicitly declares men and women equal before Allah.

Detailed Explanation
Khadijah (RA), the Prophet's first wife, was a successful independent businesswoman who employed the Prophet ﷺ before their marriage. The Prophet ﷺ forbade female infanticide, which was common in pre-Islamic Arabia. Women in early Islam led prayers, narrated hadiths, owned businesses, and participated in public life. Aisha (RA) is one of the most important scholars in Islamic history.
Where This Misconception Came From
Conflation of cultural practices in some Muslim-majority countries with Islamic doctrine. Practices like honour killings, forced marriage, and female genital mutilation are cultural phenomena that predate Islam and are explicitly condemned by it.
